Summary
Citation: Swales, John M. Genre Analysis: English in academic and research settings. “The Concept of Discourse Community.” Michigan: Cambridge. Pgs. 21-32.
In this chapter of John Swales’ “Genre Analysis” he talks about discourse communities and how to determine if a group is a discourse community. He list six major characteristics that every discourse community possesses. Then Swales goes further into detail about these six characteristics.
Analysis
While I was reading the chapter from Swales book I noticed how Swales listed everything for the reader. I think he did this to give the reader an idea of what he was going to talk about. I have read this article before in ENC 1101 but now that I have reread it I noticed that Swales makes a statement that I did not remember before. When he discusses the six characteristics of a discourse community he said that he would “like to propose six defining characteristics that will be necessary and sufficient.” When I read this I read it with an authoritative voice. I think that Swales wanted the readers to get his point and understand that without these six characteristics, there is no discourse community.
Questions I still have:
Are these the only characteristics of a discourse community or are there more? How many more?
